EMC does storage services, and "VMWare":http://www.vmware.com/ makes software that lets you run Windows on a Linux machine, or Linux on a Windows machine, in a window. My guess is that they're trying to become the next "Computer Associates":http://ca.com/; branching out into a larger vendor of both hardware and software. I fail to see the synergy, however.
