stinky (or, mom always said to wash behind your ears)

while getting ready to head out to brunch yesterday, i was taking a nice long hot shower, and decided to clean out my ears. no, not with a q-tip... i mean taking out the eyelets in my ears and cleaning all the sebum off of them. i love my piercings (maybe one day i'll get around to doing a little writeup about my experiences getting them). when i was getting them done, i was really into the whole culture and community of it.

but let me just tell you... there is not a lot out there that is stinkier than that funk that builds up on my ear jewelry.

going pro (or, the winds of change cost 35 bucks these days)

ok, screwing around with my templates some more on this sunday morn. having all kinds of problems uploading, but that's ok... i can just save them as draft postings, because i just upgraded to blogger pro(tm)! yes, for some reason i thought that pro had some sort of automatic comments feature, so i wouldn't have to keep manually creating ones in quicktopic, but i guess i was mistaken. it does have some pretty cool features, however. spellcheck, emailing of updates, file uploading, publishing in the future, saving drafts (like this one), and some other cool stuff. i figure i use it regularly enough that i can throw the $35 pyra's way.

wellity, wellity, wellity.... looks as

wellity, wellity, wellity....looks as though my little sister has got herself a little ol' blog. i'll have to read up on this tonight... it looks like she has quite a lot to say (not that that surprises me).

what a jam-packed weekend i have ahead of me.... tonight is a friend's photography art opening, followed by a little whine and cheese at a friend's. tomorrow i'm doing brunch with the Special Lady Friend (a friend of hers is getting married), then the bob mould show at rosebud, and _then_ another little wingding with paul. sunday will hopefully be some coopers bouldering.

futzed around with my link

futzed around with my link styles a bit this morning... stole the idea directly from rebecca blood. i don't think i'll go back and update my old posts, but from here on out: an external link will be blue or purple, depending on whether or not you've visited it already.. standard netscape stuff. a tan, dashed link signifies a link to something else within feralboy.com, blog or other. links in the nav column will be solid tan.. didn't want the archive listing to look like a big dotted mess.

i like deluding myself that enough people even read this thing that it matters what i do with link colors.

slept like utter crap last

slept like utter crap last night... my little nagging cold has exploded into the full-nose-blown variety; stuffy nose, sore throat, etc. i hope i don't have strep throat... i heard someone at the gym last night talking about how they had it recently. anyway, i stopped at cvs this morning and armed myself. in addition to the pseudo-dayquil (which contains pseudoephedrine (which makes me a little psuedo-nutty)), and 500mg vitamin c softgels i already had, i picked up some cold-eze, and some lotion tissues. take that!

as soon as the weather

as soon as the weather starts to get chilly, i have a perma-cold pretty much the entire winter. this year it seems to be especially bad for some reason.. lingering symptoms w/out blossoming into a full-blown cold that can keep me home from work, or at least prompt me to take zinc/cold-eze/whatever. i have this constant little tickle in my throat, and i'm clearing and hemming and coughing every 5 seconds, and i'm sure it's driving all my poor coworkers nuts.

if i wasn't sure before

if i wasn't sure before that radio consolidation is a Bad Thing(tm), a little incident this a.m. made me 100% positive. i was driving back from the SLF's, where i had enjoyed a lovely evening of homemade thai food and "other" activities. there was a boring story on the local npr station, so i switched over to the rock station to hear some howard. they were in the midst of commercials, too. defeated, i slumped back in my seat, since i was only a minute or two from home, anyway. so, in the middle of all the ads for penis enlargement and drivers license lawyers, they played a "bumper" for the local i'm-not-sure-what-format-we-are-so-we'll-cover-all-the-bases station. it just made me think about some huge octopus-looking computer, like the evil computer from superman III, just churning out "all your favorite hits of the 80s and 90s". makes me sad for the state of modern music, and how the top 5 songs every week sound exactly the same. i also noticed when i was collecting links for this entry that the websites for both stations look almost exactly the same. i guess that makes sense, but could you at least pick a different color scheme for one of them???

i finally got the panties

i finally got the panties out of my mouth and rode in this a.m.i had my thin little fleece gloves all set aside to wear, and then promptly forgot them. man, were my hands cold when i got here! my body was totally sweaty, and my hands were freezing.. fun combo. i'll do a better writeup about the weekend and the wedding later, when work calms down, but right now i'm just starting the downward spiral, which is some fantastic angry coding music. i got all motivated on my drive back listening to a nin covers album... picked that up sunday waiting for the wedding to start, along with a johnny cash tribute album.

i also visited gnc and got some psyllium husk, and started taking that this a.m. i'm very excited to have 3-pound poops.

I *heart* Whole Foods

i have found a new love, and she is whole foods. went last night to the grand opening with the SLF, and that place is just phenominal. i had been to one in austin maybe about 5 years ago (i was doing training for my previous job), and i was just blown away by the selection, and that was before i even thought about making a conscious effort to eat healthier. anyway, with the crappy selection of food jobbers that are around here, it was so nice to walk in that door last night. their produce is amazing. i got a bag of the nicest green grapes that i've had in recent memory, and every other bag on display looked to be its equal. their seafood looked fantastic... reasonable pricing on the fresh stuff, and a great selection of flash-frozen cuts; tuna steaks, salmon steaks, etc. moving on to the meat department they had all sorts of ready-to-go treats... flank steak stuffed with asparagus, blue cheese and garlic(!), salmon stuffed with crabmeat, and lobster stuffed with tacos (wait, strike that last one).

their cheese department rivaled that of la chacuterie in shadyside... both in selection and knowledgable and helpful staff. i think i need to have a little wine 'n' cheese bash again, post-haste.

the "crunchy" department was unrivaled... every type of natural potato chip, all the kashi cereal, bars, and underpants (i think) you could shake a stick at. fresh bread that was fantastic.

the SLF was impressed as well... all 3 things that she sort of wistfully said "i wish they had this one thing that i love, but i know they won't"... they did, and at good prices, too.

i think i pretty much spent the entire night walking around saying "i need to have a lie-down."

i'm going to try and get over there tonight and do some serious shopping, but i don't know if i'll have time. my best friend's parents are in town this weekend, and i'm heading out tonight to go to w.v. for a climbing wedding. no, the wedding ceremony won't be held on a cliff, but it is going to be down at the new river gorge, and on bridge day, no less. that means that i need to be down and on the right side of the river before tomorrow a.m., because the bridge is going to be closed all day. furthermore, that means that if i want to see the other parents for a little while, i need to do that right after work, and then truck on down so i can pitch my tent and get to bed at a reasonable hour. can't climb 3 days straight w/out lots of rest.

i realized the other night at the j mascis show that i've started to think in blog. as i'm watching the band, i'm thinking to myself about the lines i might write, and where i'll find useful links to illustrate my points; either sites i already know about, or searches i'll have to do. (i was looking in vain last week for a site i saw years ago that involved dumb guys taking an aquarium pump and sticking the hose up their asses and inflating their stomachs from the inside over the course of a few hours. don't ask.)

review of j mascis show at rosebud

ok, so the j mascis show last night was pretty cool. i got to the club a few minutes before the doors opened; i was actually first in line. i would have been first in, but some ratty-dreaded woman with her kid and boyfriend and some other old guy (with white sneakers for god's sake!) sort of wormed their way in front of me. i didn't get particularly upset, but i was still a tiny bit annoyed that just because there was physical space between my body and the locked door that they could just sort of wander in front of me and then go in ahead of me.... i always wish that i was a bigger guy, but last night really crystallized it for me. if i was some 6'4" 220lb lummox, they probably wouldn't have done it. "take karate and learn how to kick ass", you say? well, i wouldn't actually want to hurt anyone... just would want to look menacing enough that nobody would fuck with me. a good friend of mine from my old hometown has been taking all sorts of street fighting classes, and he's stopped just shy of a brown belt, because apparently when you hit brown belt, you are legally a deadly weapon, which would have much graver implications if you were to get into a fight, which my friend does occasionally.

anyway, get in, get a good table (the SLF was going to be meeting me there), and wait.

the opening act was cobra verde, and they were pretty friggin' awful. it's kinda hard to tell from pictures on their site, or from the ones i took, but half the guys looked like someone famous.... ....'s brother. the lead singer looked like a fat eddie vedder. the one guitar player looked like a cross between charles manson and the unabomber, but was so skinny that his face looked like beaker from the muppet show. and the other guitarist looked like that greasy irish dude dominic from the real world.

so, they start, and the singer is jumping around like an idiot... holding his arms in all tight to his body, and in general flopping around like a prissy idiot. he was acting like robert plant at the end of a 3-hour zep show, but they had just started. he also did this thing where he would wave his full beer bottle around like a crazy tamborine or something, but he was smart enough to put his thumb into the neck of the bottle... a "real" rock star would have just sort of let the beer fly, you know? i think he just did it to build up the carbonation, so when he took his thumb out it would make an impressive spray.

thankfully they were done after an hour, and j mascis came on. first of all, he is looking old. his hair is quite gray, and he looked a lot like smokey from the big lebowski.

his performance was fantastic, however. his voice is as good as it's always been... as good as on "martin + me", and that's going back 6 years or so. he played a lot of cool older stuff; "thumb", "so what else is new", "repulsion", as well as some things off of his newer albums. he was playing with an acoustic guitar, but would occasionally turn on some distortion to rawk out a bit more. he actually had some sort of cool digital real-time looping stomp box, which he would use to record himself playing a rhythm part, and then kick on the fuzz and throw down a solo over his own accompanyment.

when he finished his solo set, he had the drummer and singer (now playing bass) from cobra verde come out and help him do some heavier songs... "ammaring", "freak scene", etc. at one point, someone yelled out from the crowd for him to play "keeblin", at which point he said "i already played keeblin"... nice of that guy to be paying attention, right?

all in all, a very good show. have some pictures:  &nbsp
